Diana Ross Withdraws from ‘Star of the Seas’ Godmother Role — Royal Caribbean to Announce Replacement Soon

Diana Ross withdraws from Star of the Seas Godmother Role

In a surprising turn of events, beloved music icon Diana Ross will no longer serve as godmother of Royal Caribbean’s latest and most anticipated ship, Star of the Seas. She will also not be appearing at the ship’s naming ceremony, set for August 20, 2025, at Port Canaveral.

A Special Honor, Now Unfulfilled

Ross, widely celebrated as the "Queen of Motown," was named godmother of the Icon-class vessel in June 2025, an honorary tradition symbolizing good luck and safe voyages. The announcement had thrilled both cruise enthusiasts and fans alike.

Royal Caribbean expressed its regret with an official statement:

“We are disappointed that Diana Ross is unable to join us to be Godmother of Star of the Seas. We look forward to announcing our new Godmother soon.”

The Naming Ceremony: Still On, with a New Face to Come

Despite the change, the August 20 naming ceremony aboard Star of the Seas remains on schedule. Royal Caribbean has not yet revealed who will step into the role, but promises an announcement in the near future.

Notably, in a shift they recently made with the ship’s sister vessel, Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean chose soccer icon Lionel Messi as godfather, showing that star power could come from any field.

Star of the Seas: A Spectacular Vessel

The ship boasts impressive specs and stellar onboard amenities:

  • One of the world’s largest cruise ships, spanning over 248,000 gross tons, stretching 1,196 feet long, and accommodating over 5,600 guests at double occupancy (over 7,000 at maximum capacity).

  • Packed with five signature shows, more than 40 dining and drinking venues, relaxing pools, and thrilling water slides, Star of the Seas promises unforgettable experiences for all ages.

This launch marks a major milestone for Royal Caribbean, as the second ship in its innovative Icon Class and the first to debut a show like “Back to the Future: The Musical” at sea.
